It's that time of year when we focus on making people aware of the health issues relating to Type 2 diabetes. In the Bass Coast Shire alone, 6% of the population has diabetes and more than 2 people each week are diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes.
Diabetes is a condition where too much glucose (sugar) is in the bloodstream. Eating too much sugar does not cause type 2 Diabetes. Overweight and inactivity are major risk factors however. The rate of type 2 Diabetes increases with age, almost 10 fold between the ages of 35-75 years.
PIMG has been managing diabetes and pre-diabetes for many years with a team of committed doctors, a diabetes educator, mental health and practice nurses. Other professionals such as podiatrist, optometrist and general physician are at hand as well. For diabetes to be mananged well it requires a team approach to maintain optimal health.
PIMG has many programs in place to assist you if you are at risk of developing diabetes or have type 1 or 2 diabetes . If you are 45-49 years old, our nurse can do a Health Check (with no out of pocket cost) to determine if you are at risk. People with diabetes can also have a management plan put in place, which can involve other professionals (also without any cost to the patient). Please discuss this with your GP at an appointment.
